getmoza vs the Free Photo Mosaic Makers: Limits, Checked

Search "free photo mosaic maker" and you get a wave of browser tools: Mosaicify Studio, MosaicFace, Rapid-Mosaic, Mosaic-Maker, PicCollages, TopImgTools, EasyMoza and a few more. Most are free to try, most need no account, and for a wallpaper or a birthday post they are fine. The question this article answers is narrower: where does each one stop, and does it matter for what you are making?

We build getmoza, so read this with that in mind. To keep it fair we used a simple rule: every number about a competitor below is that tool's own published figure, from its homepage, FAQ or pricing page, re-checked on 17 October 2026. Where a tool publishes nothing, the table says so rather than guessing. Where we didn't look, it says "not checked". For getmoza we state only what our own site already promises, so you can hold us to it.

Sources, all visited 17 October 2026: mosaicifystudio.com and /faq, mosaicface.com, rapidmosaic.com and its pricing-and-shipping page, mosaic-maker.com and /photo-mosaic-prices, piccollages.com/photo-mosaic-maker, topimgtools.com/mosaic.php, easymoza.com/en/prices and /en/faq. TileKoala shows up in the same search results, but its page describes a grid-layout collage (exports up to 10,000 × 10,000 px), not a photo mosaic, so it is not in the table. If any of these figures is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

Changed since our September version: MosaicFace now sells a €14.99 export "up to 12K resolution" and prints from about €29; Mosaic-Maker now says a mosaic is ready "within a couple of minutes", so we removed our old note about two-hour uploads; EasyMoza now sells prints, inside the EU only.

What the columns mean, in plain words

Max output is the number that decides whether a print will look sharp. A print wants about 300 pixels per inch: a 60 × 60 cm canvas needs roughly 7,087 × 7,087 px. Mosaic-Maker's biggest file, 10 megapixels, is about 3,160 px on each side: fine to about 25 cm at 300 DPI, soft beyond it. Rapid-Mosaic states about 150 PPI, half the print standard. "4K" from TopImgTools is around 3,840 px on the long side. The pixel maths is here.

Main-photo overlay setting. Many tools have one, called "main photo visibility", "main image blend" or "overlay blending". It washes the big picture over the small photos so the mosaic reads from a distance. The catch is that the tiles fade with it; up close, the photos you chose become a coloured haze. Several tools let you turn it down to zero, and then the mosaic has to stand on tile matching alone. getmoza has no such slider: each tile is placed at full strength and colour-matched, and placement is face-aware so the faces in the main photo stay readable. Don't take our word for it: zoom into the free preview at 100% and look at a single tile. If you can recognise the photo, it's a true mosaic.

Prints. A file is half the product. Rapid-Mosaic, MosaicFace, EasyMoza and getmoza print for you; Mosaic-Maker tells you to use a print shop, and the browser tools hand you an image. That's fine if you have a lab you trust; a mosaic is a demanding print job, so check the lab's resolution requirement against the file first.

Wait. Rapid-Mosaic emails a preview 30 to 120 minutes later. The browser-based tools are instant because they render on your own machine, which is also why their ceiling is your device's memory. getmoza renders on our servers and shows a preview in minutes without an account.

Mosaicify Studio: free, local, and open about its limits

Mosaicify Studio is the free tool we'd point most people to for a screen-sized mosaic, and the one people search for by name. Checked on 17 October 2026, its own pages say:

• It is free, with no account. "Mosaicify Studio is completely free to use and does not require sign-up or account creation." There is a buy-me-a-coffee link and "no hidden fees or watermarks".
• Your photos stay on your device. "Everything runs directly in your browser." That is a real privacy advantage over any server-based tool, ours included.
• The resolution is computed small and rendered large. "Images larger than 800 pixels on either side are automatically resized to 800 × 800 px before processing." The export is then rendered at 8× on desktop, up to 6,400 × 6,400 px, and at 5× on mobile, up to 4,000 × 4,000 px.
• It has an overlay control. The editor offers "Main Photo Visibility" at low, medium or high, plus blend styles.

What that means in practice: 6,400 px is about 54 cm at 300 DPI, so on paper the file looks print-sized. But the mosaic is worked out from an 800 px image, so the detail a large print can show is limited. For a phone wallpaper, a story or a group-chat surprise it is more than enough. For a 60 × 60 cm canvas you'd hang in a hallway, run the pixel test from the table above first.

Pick Mosaicify Studio if the mosaic lives on a screen, you want it free, and you'd rather your photos never leave your device. Pick something else if it is going on a wall.

Where the free tools are genuinely the right pick

• For a screen, a story or a group chat: Mosaicify Studio. Free, no watermark, no upload.
• For zero cost and zero decisions: PicCollages or TopImgTools. Free, ad-supported, instant. Fine for a laugh.
• For the cheapest large file you'll print yourself inside the EU: EasyMoza at €7–12 (checked 2026-10-17). Run the zoom test on your own photos first. More in our EasyMoza review.
• For a print without leaving the tool, if a 150 PPI file is enough: Rapid-Mosaic, with its emailed preview one to two hours later.

Where getmoza is the right pick

When the mosaic is going on a wall. That means true 300 DPI at the size you actually order, tiles that survive someone walking up to them, and a print you can order in the same place with the price visible before you start, paper from €39 to gallery frames from €315, from a company you can name. If you only want the file, it is €9.95 for a print-ready JPG, and you can preview free in minutes with no account before deciding anything. Tile photos can come from your camera roll or a public Instagram handle.

Frequently asked questions

Will there be a watermark?

Not on getmoza: the free preview is unwatermarked and so is the file you buy. Among the others, MosaicFace's free 1080p export is watermarked (the €14.99 export is not; checked 2026-10-17) and EasyMoza's free version carries its web address in the corner. Mosaicify Studio, PicCollages and TopImgTools say they add no watermark.

Do I need to sign up?

No. getmoza needs no account for the preview or the purchase; you enter an email at checkout so we can deliver the file. Mosaicify Studio and PicCollages say no signup is needed either.

Can I print it?

Yes. A getmoza file is a 300 DPI JPG at the size you choose, so any print shop can use it, or you can order a paper, canvas, aluminium, acrylic or framed print from us at the prices shown. With the free tools, check the output size first: a 6,400 px file rendered from an 800 px working image, or a 10 MP file, will look soft on a large print.

How many photos do I need?

On getmoza: no hard minimum — the preview asks for 30, 100+ gives the richest result, up to 300. EasyMoza asks for at least 20. The browser tools mostly don't publish a cap; they are limited by your device's memory.

Is 6,400 pixels enough to print?

For a small print, yes: 6,400 px is about 54 cm at 300 DPI. But Mosaicify's own FAQ says photos are resized to 800 px before processing and the output is rendered at 8×, so the file carries far less real detail than its pixel count suggests. Printed large, that shows. For screens it is more than enough.

What is a main-photo overlay slider?

Where are my photos stored, and when are they deleted?

Uploads are stored to build your preview and process your order. After an order is completed we keep the photos and generated files for up to 30 days for reprints and support, then delete them; uploads that never became an order are cleared out regularly (the cleanup routine targets anything older than 7 days), and download links expire after 7 days. Do the free tools upload my photos?

Mosaicify Studio, PicCollages and TopImgTools say they process photos in your browser, so your photos stay on your device: a real privacy advantage. getmoza renders on our servers, which is what makes 300 DPI output possible; see the retention answer above.

How long does it take?

getmoza shows a preview in minutes. The browser tools are instant. Rapid-Mosaic emails a preview 30 to 120 minutes later. Printed getmoza orders take usually 5–12 working days, depending on product and country.

Why does getmoza cost money when others are free?

Because the file is different: rendered at true 300 DPI for the ordered size on our servers, with every tile at full strength and face-aware placement, from a company with a legal notice you can write to. If you are making something for a screen, the free tools are the sensible choice and we say so.

Who actually prints and ships a getmoza order?

Prints are made by professional photo labs (WhiteWall in the EU) and shipped to 30+ countries across Europe, the UK, North America and Oceania. The seller on your invoice is Artiq ehf., a company registered in Iceland, named in the legal notice with terms and VAT number.

Can I import photos from Instagram?

Yes: type a public handle and getmoza pulls the grid as tiles. We didn't find an Instagram import on the other tools' pages.

Can I check the quality before paying?

Yes. The getmoza preview is free, unwatermarked and zoomable to every tile. Look at a single tile at 100%: if it is a sharp photo rather than a tinted blur, the print will be too.
