Made for the days before a service

Most memorial collages are needed within days, from whatever can be found: a shoebox of prints, a few scans from a sibling, phone photos from the last years. The In memory story is built for exactly that mix. Scans without dates are kept in the order you add them, dated photos fall into sequence, and the portrait with the clearest face becomes the hero.

The digital file arrives by email within minutes of payment, so there is a printable file for the service even when the paper print comes later. A single line, in a classic Garamond, holds the name and the years; the en dash is set for you.

Old scans, treated honestly

Scans are small by today’s standards. The engine measures each one and gives it a cell it can fill sharply at the size you order, rather than enlarging it until it blurs. Spacing is a little wider than in the other stories, so sepia and black-and-white prints sit calmly next to colour.

Faces in old prints are often close to the edge. They are detected and padded like any other, so the hero portrait keeps its headroom and nobody is cropped at the shoulder.

Who is it for?

You pick the story. The story sets the spacing, the typeface, the hero size and the order of the photos. There are no templates to browse.

How we design it

Nothing here is a filter or a template. These are rules the layout engine cannot break, checked again on the server before anything is printed.

Faces stay whole

Every face is detected on our server and padded. A crop or a pan can never bring a face to the edge of its cell, and no face sits within 10 mm of the trim. There is no override.

Sharp at the size you order

Every placed photo must print at 110 pixels per inch or better. Small WhatsApp or Instagram photos go into smaller cells on their own; a photo that cannot print sharp is set aside, not stretched.

In the order it happened

Photos are read for date and time and laid out in sequence. Near-duplicates are grouped and the sharpest kept, screenshots are set aside, and the photo with the most faces or the best light becomes the hero.

Colour that reads as one print

Phone and camera photos are balanced toward each other in Lab colour, skin tones protected, so a 2009 compact and a 2026 iPhone sit together. Natural or black and white, your choice.

The proof is the print

One layout file drives the preview in your browser, the proof you approve and the file we send to the lab. Gutters are exact to the pixel, the paper is a warm white, and the order carries the fingerprint of the proof you saw.

How many photos fit

Sizes are 3:4, portrait or landscape, printed at 100 pixels per centimetre. The ranges below keep every photo large enough to look at.

Questions

Can I mix scans and phone photos?

Yes. Scans without a date keep the order you add them in; dated photos are placed in sequence. You can move any photo afterwards, and the colour balance can be turned off if you prefer each print as scanned.

How quickly can I have something for the service?

The digital print file is emailed within minutes of payment and can be printed at any local print shop the same day. The fine-art paper print follows from the lab.

How many photos do I need?

Between 4 and 40 placed photos. The sweet spot is 9 to 25. You can upload up to 200; the engine picks a set that spreads across the dates, and everything else waits in a tray with a reason, so nothing is lost.

Which file types work?

JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC straight from an iPhone. Live Photos are taken as stills. Scans of old prints work well; we read the orientation and colour profile of every file.

Will a face ever be cut off?

No. Faces are detected on our server, padded, and treated as a hard rule: the layout engine rejects any arrangement that would cut one, and your own panning and zooming stop before a face reaches the edge. If a photo cannot be placed without cutting a face at a given size, it moves to the tray with that reason.

What if some photos are low resolution?

Each photo must print at 110 pixels per inch or better at the size you order. Small WhatsApp or Instagram photos are placed in smaller cells automatically. Anything under 700 pixels on its short side is kept out of the print, and the size cards tell you when a larger print would push photos into the tray.

Can I change the layout?

Yes, within the rules. Swap two photos, make one the hero, pan and zoom inside a cell, add or remove from the tray, and ask for another arrangement as often as you like. Undo is unlimited. There are no spacing sliders, stickers or backgrounds; the story sets those.

Can I add a name and dates?

One line, up to 48 characters, in one of four lettering styles (Classic, Italic, Modern, Minimal) and three sizes; each story starts with its own. The line sits centred in the space under the photos, so it never overlaps them, and if you leave it empty the photos fill the page. Accents, Þ, ð, ß and similar letters print correctly; emoji cannot be printed in these typefaces.

What do I receive?

Every order includes the digital print file, emailed within minutes of payment. A paper order is also printed on fine-art paper by a German fine-art lab and shipped to you. You see a proof at print scale, with a loupe, before you pay.

How long does delivery take?

The digital file arrives within minutes. Prints are produced after payment and shipped worldwide; allow up to 19 days. From mid-September until Christmas, the last order date for Christmas delivery is shown at the top of this page.

Is this a template?

No. The layout is solved for your photos: their shapes, faces, dates and resolution. Two sets of photos never get the same print, and the same set re-solves when you change the size.
